[2-Minute Tutorial] How to Develop High-Quality Nonwoven Structures

Fiber Orientation Distribution Tutorial
The Nonwovens Institute will host the latest edition of the Nonwoven Fabric Property Development and Characterization Short Course Dec. 5-8. The following tutorial covers a segment of material that will be covered during the course, with a focus on fiber orientation distribution.

The Nonwoven Fabric Property Development and Characterization Short Course is presented at The Nonwovens Institute (NWI) on the Centennial Campus of NC State University. This course, which is offered in partnership with INDA, the Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry, provides an in-depth understanding of how the most important nonwoven fabric properties are achieved and how they are measured.

The Nonwoven Fabric Property Development and Characterization Short Course will cover the full hierarchy of properties for nonwovens from polymer and fiber properties to structure and fabric properties to end-product properties. Topics covered during the course will include tensile, basis weight, compressibility, softness, fiber orientation, distribution and diameter, moisture and vapor transmission, flammability, burst and tear resistance, absorbency and uniformity – just to name a few. In addition, the training will help attendees gain knowledge around such critically important factors as the thermal and rheological properties of polymers, fiber structure and morphology properties.

“Attendees will also have the opportunity to work hands-on in NWI’s world-class fabrication and testing labs, learning by doing and working through real-world scenarios on a variety testing instruments,” said Behnam Pourdeyhimi, professor and executive director, The Nonwovens Institute, who will be among the expert instructors leading the training. “Upon completion of the course, attendees will be able to, for example, properly characterize filter media for filtration efficiency and pressure drop and wipes for wiping efficiency, as well as test and characterize for other leading nonwoven end-use applications.”

High-quality fiber orientation distribution is a key characteristic in determining the success (or failure) of nonwoven materials in many applications.
