Nonwoven Fabric Property Development and Characterization Short Course

June 4 - June 7

The Nonwoven Fabric Property Development and Characterization Short Course provides attendees a fundamental understanding of polymer properties, fiber properties, fabric properties and product-specific properties, with a product exemplar to show how each of these properties influence success in a real-world scenario. This course is designed to be accessible and valuable to both those who are new to the field and/or come from a non-technical background, as well as seasoned nonwovens professionals.

Upon completing the course, attendees will have an in-depth understanding of how the most important nonwoven fabric properties are achieved and how they are measured. This course will consider properties such as tensile, basis weight, compressibility, softness, fiber orientation, distribution and diameter, moisture and vapor transmission, and flammability, just to name a few. Attendees will also benefit from hands-on learning with experiments in The Nonwovens Institute’s state-of-the-art fabrication and testing labs.

Featured Topics Include:

  • Testing and Quality Management System
  • Certification Process (ISO 9001, ISO 17025, etc.)
  • Structural Attributes and Characterization Methods
  • Mechanical Properties
  • Haptics – Measurement of “Hand”
  • Flammability and Thermal Evaluation
  • Scanning Electron Microscope Applications
  • Image Analysis for Nonwovens
  • Lab Tours and Practical Demonstrations

Expert Instructors:

  • Behnam Pourdeyhimi, Ph.D., Executive Director, The Nonwovens Institute (NWI)
  • Benoit Maze, Ph.D.,  Director of Education and Administration, The Nonwovens Institute (NWI)
  • Amy Minton, Analytical and Filtration Testing Lab Manager, The Nonwovens Institute (NWI)
  • Dave Nelson, Director of Industry Engagement, The Nonwovens Institute (NWI), former Product Development, 3M
  • Jining Xie Ph.D., Nanoscience Instruments, Inc.
